Swap Monero (XMR) to Bitcoin (BTC)
XMR to BTC is the usual way back from Monero to the most liquid coin ā to pay someone who only takes Bitcoin, move to an exchange or simply rebalance. Send XMR from your own wallet and receive BTC on-chain at a floating rate, without an account.
XMR to BTC: what matters
Going from XMR back to Bitcoin is mostly about the sending wallet. Monero can only spend outputs that have passed the 10-block lock, so if you received XMR or made a payment in the last 20 minutes, part of the balance may still be locked and the wallet will refuse to send the full amount. Check the unlocked balance first, then send the exact amount from the order in one transaction ā a 'send all' sweep subtracts the network fee from the total and the deposit arrives short. The BTC payout goes to an ordinary on-chain address and is visible on the Bitcoin chain like any other transaction.
Monero hides senders, receivers and amounts on its own chain: ring signatures (16 members since the August 2022 upgrade), one-time stealth addresses and RingCT. That privacy covers only the Monero leg ā the coin you swap from stays as visible as it always was.
Bitcoin has no smart-contract tokens to worry about here: one network, one asset, and confirmations are the only variable.
Monero vs Bitcoin: the networks side by side
| XMR | BTC | |
|---|---|---|
| Network | Monero mainnet (proof of work, RandomX); private by default | Bitcoin mainnet (proof of work) |
| Blocks / confirmation | a block about every 2 minutes; received XMR stays locked for 10 blocks (about 20 minutes) before it can be spent | a new block roughly every 10 minutes on average (individual blocks can take 1 to 30+ minutes) |
| Address format | 95 characters: primary address starts with 4, subaddresses with 8; an integrated address is 106 characters and starts with 4 | bc1q⦠(SegWit), bc1p⦠(Taproot), 3⦠(P2SH) or legacy 1⦠ā all are accepted |
| Network fee | set by the wallet from the transaction size and the network's dynamic fee; usually cents | priced in sat/vByte and set by your wallet; when the mempool is full a low fee can leave the transaction unconfirmed for hours |
| Memo / tag | not used | not needed to receive |
| Wallets | Feather, Cake Wallet, Monero GUI, Monerujo | Electrum, Sparrow, BlueWallet, Trezor, Ledger |
How to swap XMR to BTC, step by step
- 1
Select XMR ā BTC in the widget and enter the amount. It shows the current minimum and the BTC you will receive. This pair is float-rate only, with every fee already included in the amount you receive.
- 2
Paste your BTC address ā bc1q⦠(SegWit), bc1p⦠(Taproot), 3⦠(P2SH) or legacy 1⦠ā all are accepted. Copy it from your wallet (Electrum, Sparrow, BlueWallet, Trezor, Ledger) and compare the first and last characters.
- 3
Create the order and send exactly the shown amount of XMR to the deposit address. Bookmark the order link ā it shows the live status.
- 4
Wait for confirmations: a block about every 2 minutes; received XMR stays locked for 10 blocks (about 20 minutes) before it can be spent. The liquidity provider sets how many are required; the order page shows the live count.
- 5
BTC is sent to your address automatically. On the receiving side: a new block roughly every 10 minutes on average (individual blocks can take 1 to 30+ minutes). The transaction hash appears on the order page.
Common XMR ā BTC mistakes
Freshly received XMR ā and the change from your own last payment ā is locked for 10 blocks. If the wallet says the balance is locked, wait about 20 minutes; nothing is wrong.
Do not look for a separate payment ID field. Long payment IDs were removed from Monero in 2019 (v0.15); for your own wallet a subaddress is enough, and an integrated address must be pasted whole.
A wallet that has not finished syncing shows zero even after the payout. Let it sync (or restore from the right restore height) before assuming the XMR is missing ā the payout hash is on the order page.
Do not send BCH or BSV to a BTC deposit address ā they are different chains and such funds are usually unrecoverable.
KOT.CASH vs a centralised exchange for XMR ā BTC
| KOT.CASH | Centralised exchange | |
|---|---|---|
| Account & KYC | No sign-up; no ID documents for standard swaps | Account required; regulated exchanges must verify identity |
| Steps | One order: send XMR, receive BTC at your own address | Deposit XMR ā wait for credit ā trade ā request BTC withdrawal |
| Custody | Funds pass through the service only for the swap | Funds sit in the exchange account until you withdraw |
| Withdrawal | Automatic once the deposit is confirmed | Withdrawal fee; limits, holds or extra checks are possible |
| Cost | Float rate only; service fee, gateway costs and payout network fee are already in the amount you receive | Trading fee, spread and withdrawal fee ā vary by exchange and volume |
| Where a CEX is better | No fiat, limit orders or margin ā crypto-to-crypto swaps only | Fiat on/off-ramp, limit orders, very large volumes |
This compares how the processes work, not any specific exchange. Exchange tariffs change ā check them on the platform itself.
XMR to BTC: questions people ask
My wallet won't let me send the whole XMR balance ā why?
Part of it is still locked: received outputs and the change from your last payment stay unspendable for 10 blocks (about 20 minutes). Wait until the unlocked balance covers the order amount.
Can I use 'send all' to pay the order?
Better not. A sweep deducts the Monero network fee from the amount, so the deposit is slightly less than the order asks for. Send the exact amount shown.
How long does XMR to BTC take?
Monero blocks come about every 2 minutes; the order page shows when the deposit is confirmed and when the BTC is sent. The Bitcoin payout then needs its own block, about 10 minutes on average, to confirm in your wallet.
How long do XMR confirmations take?
A block about every 2 minutes; received XMR stays locked for 10 blocks (about 20 minutes) before it can be spent. The liquidity provider decides how many confirmations are required; the order page shows the live count.
Which Bitcoin address types can receive?
bc1q⦠(SegWit), bc1p⦠(Taproot), 3⦠and legacy 1⦠addresses all work. Paste an on-chain address, not a Lightning invoice.
Is there a fixed rate for XMR to BTC?
No, Monero pairs are float-only. The widget shows the BTC amount with all fees included.
Do I need to register?
No. You need only your Bitcoin address. A high-risk deposit can be held under the AML policy.
Can I use XMR in split swap or multi-hop?
No. Monero works in the simple swap only.
