How to use the crypto profit calculator
Pick the coin, type the total amount you spent in US dollars, then the buy price and the sell price. If you have not sold yet, press โUse live priceโ to fill the current market price and see your unrealized result. Fees are entered as a percentage of each trade: a typical centralized exchange charges 0.1โ0.5% per side, card purchases and instant-buy buttons often cost 1โ4% once the spread is included.
Results update as you type. Nothing is sent to a server โ the formulas run in your browser, so you can safely play with real numbers from your trading history.
The formula behind the numbers
The calculator assumes the buy fee is taken from the money you spend (you pay $1,000, part of it goes to the venue, the rest buys coins) and the sell fee is taken from the gross proceeds. That is how most exchanges and swap services show it in practice.
coins = investment ร (1 โ buyFee) / buyPrice
proceeds = coins ร sellPrice ร (1 โ sellFee)
profit = proceeds โ investment
ROI = profit / investment ร 100%
breakEven = buyPrice / ((1 โ buyFee) ร (1 โ sellFee))Worked example
You put $1,000 into Bitcoin at $60,000 and sell at $70,000, paying 0.1% on each side. The buy fee is $1, so $999 buys 0.01665 BTC. Selling at $70,000 gives $1,165.50 gross, minus a 0.1% sell fee of about $1.17 โ net proceeds of roughly $1,164.33. Your profit is about $164.33, an ROI of 16.4%, even though the price rose 16.7%. The gap is the fee drag.
With 1.5% fees per side (common for instant-buy apps), the same trade returns about $130 โ fees ate more than a fifth of the gain. That is why it pays to check the real cost of every route before you trade.
Why price change and ROI are not the same
Price change only compares two prices. ROI compares the money that came back with the money that went in, so it includes every fee and spread. For short-term trades on small moves the difference can decide whether a trade was profitable at all: with 1% total fees, a 0.8% price rise is still a loss.
The break-even price tells you how far the price must move before you are actually in profit. Use it together with the Break-Even Calculator if you also pay fixed network or withdrawal fees.
- Spread: the difference between the buy and sell quote, often hidden inside โzero-feeโ offers.
- Trading fee: maker/taker commission charged by the exchange.
- Network fee: the blockchain fee for depositing or withdrawing coins โ fixed per transaction, not a percentage.
- Slippage: the price moving against you while a large order fills.
Tips for more accurate results
Use the effective price you actually received, not the chart price at the time โ exchange confirmations and swap receipts show it. If you bought in several parts, calculate your average entry first with the Average Price Calculator and use that as the buy price. If you need gains per lot for a tax report, the Tax-Lot Calculator matches sells to buys with FIFO, LIFO or HIFO.
Remember that a profit on paper is not realized until you sell or swap. When you are ready to lock in a gain, moving into a stablecoin such as USDT is the most common way to step out of volatility without leaving crypto.
Frequently asked questions
+How do I calculate crypto profit?
Multiply the number of coins by the sell price, subtract the sell fee, then subtract everything you paid to buy (including the buy fee). Divide the result by the amount invested to get ROI. The calculator above does this automatically.
+Does the calculator include exchange fees?
Yes. Enter the buy and sell fees as percentages. The buy fee is deducted from the amount invested and the sell fee from the proceeds, matching how most exchanges charge.
+What is a break-even price in crypto?
It is the sell price at which you get back exactly what you spent after all fees. With 0.1% per side it is about 0.2% above your buy price; with 1% per side it is about 2% higher.
+Can I calculate unrealized profit for coins I still hold?
Yes โ enter your buy price and press โUse live priceโ (or type the current price) as the sell price. The result is your unrealized profit or loss right now.
+Is my data stored anywhere?
No. All calculations happen locally in your browser and nothing you type is sent to KOT.CASH.
