Litecoin is one of the oldest cryptocurrencies still in heavy use, and LTC โ USDT is one of the most common ways people lock in its value. It is fast โ Litecoin blocks come every 2.5 minutes on average โ and the network fee is usually tiny. The part people get wrong is not the Litecoin side but the USDT side: Tether exists on many blockchains, and choosing the wrong one is the classic way to lose a stablecoin transfer.
This guide covers how the swap works, how to pick the USDT network, what Litecoin address types mean (including MWEB), how long it takes and what to record for taxes. The live rate and the form are on the LTC to USDT page.
Why swap Litecoin to USDT?
Choosing the USDT network
The same USDT balance can live on several chains. Each version is a separate token with its own address format. You must receive USDT on the network your destination supports.
| Network | Address looks like | Typical use | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| TRON (TRC-20) | Starts with T | P2P, exchanges, payments | Low fees when the sender has energy; very widely supported |
| Ethereum (ERC-20) | Starts with 0x | DeFi, exchanges | Highest transfer cost of the major options |
| BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20) | Starts with 0x | Binance ecosystem, DeFi | Same address format as Ethereum โ easy to confuse |
| Solana (SPL) | Base58, no prefix | Solana apps, fast payments | Wallet needs a USDT token account (created automatically) |
The single most important rule: an 0x address can be valid on both Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain, so the address alone does not tell you the network. Confirm with the receiving platform which network it credits. Our network fee comparison and stablecoin network comparison help you see the cost difference before you decide.
Litecoin address types and MWEB
Litecoin has several address formats, and all of them can send to a swap deposit address:
Since 2022 Litecoin also has MWEB (MimbleWimble Extension Blocks), an optional privacy layer with addresses starting with ltcmweb1. Coins inside MWEB are moved with confidential amounts. Many services do not support sending to or from MWEB directly. If your LTC is in an MWEB balance, move it back to a regular address in your wallet first (a โpeg-outโ), then send from there. That avoids a deposit that the swap service cannot attribute.
Step by step: LTC to USDT
How long does it take?
Litecoin targets one block every 150 seconds. A receiving service usually waits for a few confirmations before treating the deposit as final. With six confirmations the expected wait is about 15 minutes, and nine transfers in ten finish within about 23 minutes โ block arrival is random, so some take longer. Try different confirmation counts in the confirmation time estimator.
The USDT payout on TRON, BNB Smart Chain or Solana typically confirms within a minute; on Ethereum within a few minutes.
Fees
If you swap small amounts frequently, compare networks: the cheapest payout network can make a visible difference over a year.
Mistakes to avoid
Wrong USDT network. Receiving USDT on BNB Smart Chain at an address where an exchange expects Ethereum, or vice versa, can freeze the funds in support limbo. Always copy the deposit network from the receiving platform.
Sending from an exchange that batches withdrawals late. Some exchanges process LTC withdrawals in batches. If the orderโs rate window expires before your coins arrive, the order may be recalculated. Withdraw first to your own wallet if timing matters, or allow for the delay.
Sending from MWEB. As above, peg out first.
Typos in the address. Paste, never type. Check the first and last characters. Validate the format with the address validator.
Taxes: what to record
In many jurisdictions converting LTC to USDT is a taxable disposal of LTC. Record:
If you bought LTC in several parts, the gain depends on which lots you are treated as selling. The tax lot calculator matches sales to purchases with FIFO, LIFO or HIFO, and its CSV template keeps your trade log in the right format. The profit calculator gives a quick P/L for a single trade.
Litecoin vs Bitcoin for the same job
Litecoin often serves as a cheaper, faster cousin of Bitcoin for moving value: blocks four times as frequent and generally lower fees. If you hold both and want to convert to stablecoins, it can be cheaper to swap LTC for USDT and keep BTC as a long-term holding โ or the other way round, depending on your allocation. Which coin to keep is a portfolio decision (BTC to USDT works the same way); the mechanics of the swap are the same.
LTC to USDT or LTC to BTC?
If your goal is to reduce risk, USDT is the natural destination: its value is pegged to the dollar, so the next market swing does not change what you hold. If your goal is to stay in crypto but consolidate, swapping LTC to BTC keeps you exposed to the market while concentrating on the largest asset. Many holders do both in stages โ for instance, half to USDT to lock in a gain and half to BTC for the long term. The portfolio tracker makes the resulting allocation visible, and the ROI calculator shows what the LTC position actually earned per year before you exit.
What to do with the USDT afterwards
USDT that sits in your own wallet earns nothing and carries a small issuer risk, but it is instantly usable. Typical next steps are paying someone, depositing on a platform that accepts that network, or swapping back into another coin later. If you plan to hold for months, read up on stablecoin depeg risk and consider whether part of the balance belongs in another stablecoin or in bitcoin. If you want yield, compare offers honestly โ net of fees and lock-ups โ with the stablecoin yield comparison before moving funds. And whatever you do next, keep at least a few dollarsโ worth of the networkโs native coin (TRX on TRON, BNB on BNB Smart Chain, ETH on Ethereum, SOL on Solana) if you will need to send the USDT on yourself.
Checklist before you send
Follow these points and an LTC โ USDT swap is routine: one Litecoin transaction from you, stablecoins in your own wallet a few minutes later.
