What is in the free Excel template
The template has three sheets. “Holdings” is the main table: one row per coin with amount, average buy price and current price; value, cost, unrealized P/L, P/L percent and allocation are calculated by formulas, and a total row sums everything. “Transactions” is a simple log — date, coin, buy or sell, amount, price, fee and where the coins are held — so you always know where your average price came from. “How to use” explains every column in plain words.
Formulas are ordinary Excel formulas (no macros, no add-ins), so the file works the same in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers and LibreOffice. Nothing in the file connects to the internet: you update prices yourself, which also means nobody can see your balances.
How to use the online tracker
Add each coin you hold, type the amount and your average buy price, and either type the current price or press “Fill live prices” to take prices from the KOT.CASH market ticker. The table sorts positions by value and shows your largest position and its share of the portfolio. Stablecoins are tracked like any other asset: amount 1,500 USDT at an average price of 1.00 has a value of $1,500 and zero P/L.
When you are done, press “Download my portfolio” to get an .xlsx file that contains your rows and live formulas. Next time, open the file, change the prices and the totals update by themselves. The page itself saves nothing — close the tab and the data is gone, by design.
value = amount × current price
cost = amount × average buy price
P/L = value − cost
P/L % = P/L ÷ cost × 100
allocation = value ÷ total portfolio value × 100Example portfolio
Take four holdings: 0.15 BTC bought at an average of $62,000, 2 ETH at $2,800, 25 SOL at $140 and 1,500 USDT. At prices of $100,000, $4,000, $200 and $1.00 the portfolio is worth $29,500 against a cost basis of $19,900 — an unrealized profit of $9,600, or about 48%. Bitcoin is 50.8% of the portfolio, Ethereum 27.1%, Solana 16.9% and the stablecoin reserve 5.1%.
That allocation view is the most useful number in the tracker. If you meant to hold 40% Bitcoin and it is now 51% after a rally, the portfolio is riskier than you planned; the rebalancing calculator shows exactly what to sell or buy to get back to your targets.
Average buy price: get it right once
Unrealized P/L is only as good as the average buy price you enter. If you bought in several steps, the average price is the total money spent (including fees) divided by the total coins received — not the average of the prices. Our average price calculator does this for you, and the tax-lot calculator shows how each sale changes the remaining cost basis under FIFO, LIFO or HIFO.
Coins received for free — airdrops, staking rewards, referral bonuses — need a decision: track them at zero cost or at their market value on the day received. For tax purposes many countries use the market value at receipt; for the tracker, whichever you choose, be consistent.
Tips for keeping a crypto tracker useful
A spreadsheet beats an app only if it stays up to date. A few habits make it painless.
- Log every trade in the Transactions sheet the same day — reconstructing history from exchange exports later is slow.
- Record where each coin is held (hardware wallet, exchange, mobile wallet) — it matters for security reviews and for heirs.
- Keep a copy of the file offline; do not paste it into online services that ask for exchange API keys.
- Track fees: network and swap fees are part of your cost basis.
- Review allocation monthly rather than daily — the goal is a plan, not a price ticker.
Frequently asked questions
+Is the crypto portfolio tracker template really free?
Yes. The .xlsx file is a direct download with no account, e-mail or payment. You can use it, change it and share it.
+Does it work in Google Sheets?
Yes. Upload the .xlsx to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets — the formulas are standard and keep working. It also opens in Numbers and LibreOffice.
+Does the tracker update prices automatically?
No, on purpose. The file has no internet connection, so nobody can track your balances. Type prices in, or use the online tracker’s “Fill live prices” button and export again.
+Can I track coins held on exchanges and in wallets together?
Yes. Add a row per coin and per location if you want to see both; the Transactions sheet has a “Where held” column for this.
+Do you store my portfolio?
No. The online tracker runs in your browser and saves nothing on our servers. Export the file if you want to keep your data.
+Can I download the template for free without registration?
Yes. The Excel (.xlsx) file is a direct link on this page: no account, no e-mail and no payment. You can also use the online version above and export your own numbers.
Calculations run entirely in your browser; nothing you type is sent to KOT.CASH. Results are estimates for information only and are not financial, tax or legal advice.
