ATOM secures the Cosmos Hub, the oldest chain in the Cosmos ecosystem, built with the Cosmos SDK and CometBFT consensus: blocks every few seconds and instant finality once a block is committed. Most Cosmos chains talk to each other over IBC, so ATOM often travels between the Hub, Osmosis and other zones. That is relevant for swaps because the provider accepts ATOM only on the Cosmos Hub itself, at a cosmos1… address with a memo. Staked ATOM takes 21 days to unbond, during which it earns nothing and cannot be moved. Keplr and Leap show balances per chain, so ATOM on Osmosis appears separately from ATOM on the Hub.
