What does the current deposit instruction say?
| Instruction or situation | What to do before payment | What not to infer |
|---|---|---|
| A memo is explicitly supplied | Copy the exact value into the sending walletโs memo field and review it | That the deposit address alone contains the same information |
| No memo is shown | Read the remaining instructions; clarify any mandatory sender-side field | That a number copied from another service is suitable |
| The sender cannot include the required memo | Resolve the limitation before submitting the withdrawal | That an extra message to support changes an unsigned payment |
| The transfer was already sent with different details | Keep the transaction reference and describe the discrepancy to support | That repeating the payment repairs the first transaction |
A memo can be routing information, not a personal note
The Cosmos SDK transaction definition contains a memo field in the transaction body. A receiving service can use additional transaction information to identify a customer or deposit. Coinbase documents this practice for its own ATOM deposits. That example explains why the field can matter; it does not establish a universal memo value or prove that every ATOM recipient requires one.
Treat any supplied memo as part of the funding details. An email address, the ETH payout address and a sentence describing your purchase are not substitutes for a value the recipient issued. If your withdrawal screen uses a different label, read its help before placing the value in an unrelated address-book note that might never become part of the blockchain transaction.
Read the final sender review as a complete instruction
- Address and additional field together
- Compare the outgoing ATOM address and any required memo with the current exchange details on the final confirmation screen. Checking the address once and then selecting an old saved contact can reintroduce older information. Review what will actually be submitted, not only what was first copied.
- ATOM funding is distinct from ETH receipt
- The memo discussed here belongs to the outgoing ATOM transaction if the deposit instruction requires it. Your Ethereum receiving account remains a separate payout destination. Do not paste its address into the ATOM memo field unless an actual recipient instruction explicitly calls for that exact value.
- Evidence if crediting is unclear
- Retain the exchange reference, outgoing transaction identifier and the memo that the submitted transaction actually contains. These allow support to compare the payment with the intended instruction. They are more useful than a screenshot of an unsubmitted form. Never send a recovery phrase or private key as evidence of payment.
Memo questions before sending ATOM
- Can I add a missing memo after the ATOM transaction is sent?
- A message sent to support is separate from the transaction already submitted. Provide its reference and explain what was omitted so the recipient can investigate. Do not assume a correction is automatic or guaranteed, and do not broadcast another transfer merely to attach a note about the first one.
- Does a confirmed ATOM transfer prove the exchange credited the correct operation?
- Network inclusion and recognition by the recipient are separate observations. If the required routing information differs, the recipient may need to investigate even though the transfer is visible. Check the exchange status and use the exact submitted transaction details when asking about the deposit.
