Current reserve values
Reserves are set by validator voting and have been lowered several times as XRP's price rose. Since 2 December 2024 the base reserve is 1 XRP and the owner reserve is 0.2 XRP per object (before that they were 10 XRP and 2 XRP). Both fields are editable in case they change again โ your wallet or xrpl.org shows the current values.
reserve = base reserve + owned objects ร owner reserve
spendable = balance โ reserve (transaction fees are paid from it too)What counts as an owned object
- Trust lines โ each token you hold, for example RLUSD or a USD stablecoin issued on the ledger.
- Open offers on the built-in DEX.
- Escrows, payment channels, checks and tickets you created.
- NFT pages: NFTs are stored up to 32 per page, so a page costs one owner reserve rather than each NFT.
- Signer lists and deposit preauthorizations.
Deleting the object frees its reserve. Removing a trust line requires a zero balance of that token and default settings on the line.
Activating a new address
A new XRP address does not exist on the ledger until it receives at least the base reserve. A first payment of less than 1 XRP fails with tecNO_DST_INSUF_XRP. When you withdraw XRP to a brand-new wallet, send more than 1 XRP; the first 1 XRP stays locked while the account exists. An account can be deleted to recover most of the reserve, at the cost of a special fee equal to the owner reserve.
Frequently asked questions
+What is the XRP reserve now?
1 XRP base reserve plus 0.2 XRP per owned object, after the validator vote that took effect on 2 December 2024.
+Why can't I send my full XRP balance?
The reserve stays locked as long as the account exists. You can send only the balance above the reserve, minus the small transaction fee.
+How much XRP do I need to activate a wallet?
At least 1 XRP in the first payment. In practice send a bit more so that you can also add a trust line (0.2 XRP each) and pay fees.
+Do I need a destination tag when sending to my own wallet?
No. A destination tag is needed when sending to a shared address of an exchange or a swap service; your own wallet address does not need one.
