On the XRP Ledger an address does not exist until it receives enough XRP to cover the base reserve, which is 1 XRP since the validator vote of December 2024. A payment that tries to create a new account with less than that fails with tecNO_DST_INSUF_XRP. The amount stays with the sender; only the tiny transaction cost (usually 0.00001 XRP) is spent. Send at least 1 XRP โ in practice a few XRP, so the new account can pay fees and hold a trust line โ and the account is activated.
What activation and the reserve are
The XRP Ledger keeps every account as an object in a shared state, and storing objects has a cost for every validator. To prevent spam accounts, each account must hold a base reserve that cannot be spent, plus an owner reserve for every object it owns: trust lines, open offers, escrows, NFT pages, tickets and so on. As of the December 2024 change the base reserve is 1 XRP and the owner reserve 0.2 XRP per object. So an account with one trust line for a stablecoin locks 1.2 XRP.
Wallets often say 'activate your wallet' โ that just means sending the first XRP to the new address. Exchanges and swap services that pay out XRP to a fresh address send enough to activate it, as long as the payout amount itself is above the reserve. The XRP reserve calculator shows how much of your balance is locked and how much is spendable.
Result codes and what to do
| Code | Meaning | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| tecNO_DST_INSUF_XRP | Destination does not exist and the XRP sent is below the base reserve | Send at least 1 XRP (better 2โ5) to create the account |
| tecNO_DST | Destination does not exist and you sent a token, not XRP | Activate it with XRP first, then send the token |
| tecNO_LINE / tecPATH_DRY | Recipient has no trust line for the token or no path for it | Recipient adds a trust line for that issuer |
| tecDST_TAG_NEEDED | Destination requires a destination tag | Resend with the tag the recipient gave you |
| tecUNFUNDED_PAYMENT | Sender does not have enough spendable XRP above its reserve | Send less or top up; reserve cannot be spent |
| tesSUCCESS | Payment applied | Nothing to fix |
Codes starting with tec mean the transaction was included in a validated ledger but did not do what you asked; the transaction cost is destroyed, nothing else moves. Codes starting with tem, tef or tel mean it was rejected before inclusion and nothing is charged. Explorers such as XRPScan show the code on the transaction page.
Fixing a failed first payment
- Open the transaction in an explorer by its hash and read the result code. The transaction hash identifier confirms the hash is an XRP Ledger one (64 uppercase hex characters).
- If the code is tecNO_DST_INSUF_XRP, send a new payment of at least 1 XRP to the same address. Sending 2โ5 XRP leaves room for fees and a trust line or two.
- If you wanted to send a token such as RLUSD, activate the account with XRP, have the recipient add the trust line, then resend the token.
- If the code is tecDST_TAG_NEEDED, the address belongs to a service that requires a tag; the memo and tag checker explains which coins need one.
Getting the reserve back
The reserve is locked, not spent. Removing objects frees their owner reserve: closing a trust line with a zero balance or cancelling an offer returns 0.2 XRP each to your spendable balance. The base reserve can be recovered only by deleting the account with an AccountDelete transaction, which itself destroys a fee equal to the owner reserve (0.2 XRP) and requires the account to own almost nothing and to be at least 256 ledgers old. The rest of the balance goes to a destination you choose.
XRP payouts from a swap
When you receive XRP from a KOT.CASH order, the payout goes to the address you enter; your own wallet address does not need a destination tag, but an exchange address does, and the standard swap form has no payout tag field โ so receive to your own wallet first. If the address is new, make sure the payout amount is comfortably above 1 XRP. Paying an order with XRP works the other way: the order page shows the deposit address together with the destination tag, and both must be used.
FAQ
How much XRP do I need to activate a wallet?
The base reserve, 1 XRP since December 2024. Send a little more so the account can pay fees and add trust lines.
Did I lose my XRP after tecNO_DST_INSUF_XRP?
No. Only the transaction cost (a tiny fraction of an XRP) was burned; the amount stayed in your account.
Why can't I send my whole XRP balance?
The reserve, 1 XRP plus 0.2 XRP per object you own, cannot be spent while the account exists.
Is the reserve the same on every wallet?
Yes. It is a ledger-wide setting voted by validators, not a wallet setting.
Can I get the 1 XRP reserve back?
Only by deleting the account with AccountDelete, which costs 0.2 XRP and sends the remaining balance to another address.
