opBNB vs BNB Smart Chain: Same Address, Different Network

opBNB is a separate layer 2 network built on top of BNB Smart Chain (BSC) with the OP Stack. It uses BNB for gas and the same 0x address format as BSC, so your MetaMask or Trust Wallet address is identical on both — but the balances are not. BNB or USDT on opBNB is not on BSC. When a service asks for BNB on “BSC” or “BEP20”, it means BNB Smart Chain, chain ID 56; opBNB is chain ID 204. Mixing them up is the most frequent reason a BNB deposit “does not arrive”.

What opBNB is for

BNB Chain launched opBNB mainnet in September 2023 to offer even cheaper, higher-throughput transactions for games and high-frequency apps. Like other OP Stack chains, it executes transactions itself and posts data to its parent chain — here BSC instead of Ethereum. Fees on opBNB are a tiny fraction of BSC fees, which are already low, and blocks come faster than one per second.

How funds move between BSC and opBNB

1. BSC to opBNB: deposit through the official opBNB bridge; one BSC transaction, funds appear on opBNB within minutes.
2. opBNB to BSC through the official bridge: like other optimistic rollups, a withdrawal goes through a challenge period of about seven days before you can finalise it on BSC.
3. Through an exchange: several exchanges support opBNB deposits and withdrawals, which avoids the bridge delay.
4. Third-party bridges pay out faster for a fee; check reputation and contract addresses.

What happens if you send on the wrong one

Because the address is the same, a transfer on opBNB to a BSC deposit address succeeds technically: the funds land at that address on opBNB. Whether you get them back depends on who controls the address.

• Your own wallet: nothing is lost. Add opBNB to the wallet (chain ID 204, RPC from the official documentation) and the balance appears. Then bridge or swap it.
• An exchange or swap deposit: the service has the key for the address but may not watch opBNB. Some exchanges recover such deposits manually for a fee, some cannot. Contact support with the transaction hash from opbnbscan.com.
• A contract address: if the address is a contract on BSC, the same address on opBNB may be empty or a different contract. Recovery is usually impossible.

How to tell which network your wallet is on

• In MetaMask, Rabby or Trust Wallet the network selector shows the name; opBNB appears only if it was added.
• The chain ID is definitive: 56 for BSC, 204 for opBNB.
• On exchanges, the withdrawal network list shows “BNB Smart Chain (BEP20)” and, where supported, “opBNB” as separate options.
• A transaction hash found on bscscan.com is on BSC; one found only on opbnbscan.com is on opBNB.
