Gas Fee Calculator for Ethereum and EVM Chains

A gas fee is simply the amount of work your transaction needs (gas) multiplied by the price you pay per unit of work (gwei). This calculator does that multiplication for Ethereum and other EVM networks โ€” BNB Chain, Polygon, Avalanche, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base โ€” in both the EIP-1559 format (base fee plus priority tip) and the legacy gas-price format, and converts the result to ETH and dollars.

How to use the gas calculator

Select the network whose native coin pays for gas and a transaction type. Presets fill a typical gas amount: 21,000 for a plain coin transfer, around 65,000 for an ERC-20 token transfer such as USDT or USDC, roughly 180,000 for a DEX swap. These are typical values, not guarantees โ€” the real gas used depends on the contract, so edit the number if your wallet shows a different estimate.

Enter the current base fee and priority fee in gwei (your wallet or any gas tracker shows them), and optionally a max fee. The coin price is filled from the live ticker when available. The result shows the expected fee, the effective gas price and, if you set a max fee, the worst case you could be charged.

The gas fee formula

Since the London upgrade (EIP-1559), Ethereum fees have two parts: a base fee set by the network, which is burned, and an optional priority fee (tip) that goes to the validator.

fee (ETH) = gas used ร— (base fee + priority fee) ร— 10โปโน with max fee: price per gas = min(base + priority, max fee) legacy: fee = gas used ร— gas price ร— 10โปโน fee (USD) = fee (ETH) ร— ETH price

Examples

  • ETH transfer, 21,000 gas at 20 gwei: 420,000 gwei = 0.00042 ETH โ‰ˆ $1.26 at $3,000 per ETH.
  • USDT (ERC-20) transfer, 65,000 gas at 2 gwei base + 0.5 gwei tip: 162,500 gwei = 0.0001625 ETH โ‰ˆ $0.49 at $3,000.
  • DEX swap, 180,000 gas at 30 gwei during congestion: 0.0054 ETH โ‰ˆ $16.20 at $3,000.

The same transaction can cost 10โ€“50 times more during a busy hour than on a quiet weekend morning, because the base fee rises automatically when blocks are full. If the transfer is not urgent, waiting for a lower base fee is the easiest saving.

Gas limit, gas used and why you are refunded

Your wallet sets a gas limit โ€” the maximum gas the transaction may consume. You pay only for the gas actually used, and the unused part of the limit is not charged. Similarly, with EIP-1559 you set a max fee per gas, but pay only base fee plus tip; the difference is not charged. If the limit is too low, the transaction fails and the gas spent until the failure is still paid โ€” a common and painful mistake with custom gas settings.

How to pay less gas

A few practical habits make a big difference:

  • Send stablecoins on a cheaper network when the recipient supports it โ€” compare routes with the Stablecoin Fee Comparison.
  • Avoid sending tokens during market-wide events when everyone transacts at once.
  • Batch operations: one larger transfer instead of several small ones.
  • On Layer-2 networks the fee also includes an L1 data component, so the wallet preview is the best estimate.
  • Keep a small balance of the native coin (ETH, BNB, POL) โ€” without it you cannot move tokens at all.

Glossary

Wallets often hide these fields behind โ€œslow / normal / fastโ€ presets. Opening the advanced view and comparing the numbers with this calculator is a good way to see what each preset really costs.

  • Gas โ€” a unit of computational work; every operation in a transaction costs a fixed amount of gas.
  • Gas limit โ€” the maximum gas you allow the transaction to use.
  • Base fee โ€” the minimum price per gas set by the protocol for each block; it is burned.
  • Priority fee (tip) โ€” an extra price per gas paid to the validator to include your transaction sooner.
  • Max fee โ€” the most you agree to pay per gas; you pay less if base fee + tip is lower.
  • Gwei โ€” 10โปโน ETH, the usual unit for gas prices.

Frequently asked questions

+How is a gas fee calculated?

Gas used multiplied by the gas price in gwei, then multiplied by 10โปโน to get ETH. With EIP-1559 the gas price is the base fee plus the priority fee, capped by your max fee.

+How much gas does a USDT transfer use?

An ERC-20 transfer typically uses roughly 45,000โ€“65,000 gas; the first transfer to a new holder can cost more. Your wallet shows the exact estimate.

+What is gwei?

One billionth of an ETH (10โปโน ETH). Gas prices are quoted in gwei because fees per unit of gas are tiny.

+Why did my transaction cost less than the max fee?

Because you pay the actual base fee plus tip, not the maximum you allowed. The unused part is never charged.

+Does it work for BNB Chain or Polygon?

Yes โ€” choose the network so the fee is shown in BNB, POL or AVAX and enter that network's gas price.
