How to Sell ETH for USDT: Keep Gas, Pick the Payout Network

To sell ETH for USDT without an exchange account, send ETH on Ethereum mainnet to the deposit on the ETH to USDT page and receive USDT on the network you choose. The minimum is about 0.0028 ETH — around $7 with ETH near $2,444 — and the provider waits for 6 Ethereum blocks, a little over a minute. Most of what can go wrong comes from one fact: on Ethereum, USDT is a token, and moving it later costs ETH.

The payout decision: ERC20 or something else

If you receive USDT ERC20 to the same address and later want to send it, you need ETH for gas. A USDT transfer uses about 45,000–65,000 gas; at 2 gwei that is about 0.0001 ETH, roughly a quarter of a dollar, and on a busy day at 20 gwei ten times as much. Selling your entire ETH balance and receiving USDT ERC20 leaves you with tokens you cannot move.

Receiving USDT on TRC20, BEP20 or Solana avoids that, because those networks are cheaper and the USDT ends up in a wallet where you can manage gas separately. The trade-off is that you need a wallet or exchange account on that network.

Two ways to do it, side by side

• Stay on Ethereum (USDT ERC20). Same 0x address, same wallet, Ethereum DeFi works directly. You must keep 0.002–0.005 ETH for future transfers. The payout itself carries an Ethereum gas fee inside the quote.
• Move to TRON (USDT TRC20). Payout fee about 1.3 USDT for this pair, accepted by almost every exchange and P2P desk. You will need TRX for energy to send it on — see the USDT TRC20 fee explainer.
• Move to BNB Smart Chain (USDT BEP20). Same 0x address as your Ethereum wallet, cheap gas, but you need a little BNB to send it later.

Step by step

1. Decide the payout network and copy the receive address for it.
2. Type the ETH amount in the widget. Leave enough ETH for this deposit's own gas (21,000 gas for a plain send) and, if you stay on Ethereum, for future token transfers.
3. Choose a floating (1%) or fixed (1.5%) service fee. Six blocks pass in about 72 seconds, so the floating rate rarely moves much.
4. Create the order and send ETH on Ethereum mainnet — not on Arbitrum, Base or another layer 2, which have their own pairs and deposit networks.
5. Watch the confirmations on the order page. The provider's processing estimate is 1–2 minutes after that.

Setting gas so the deposit is not stuck

Ethereum uses EIP-1559 fees: a base fee that the network sets per block and a priority tip you add. Wallets set a max fee of about twice the base fee plus the tip, which keeps the transaction valid even if the base fee rises over the next blocks. If you lower the max fee manually to save a few cents and the base fee rises, the transaction waits in the mempool until the base fee comes back down. A pending transaction also blocks every later one from the same address, because Ethereum processes them in nonce order. If the deposit sits pending for more than a few minutes, speed it up in the wallet rather than sending a second transaction.

Gas for the deposit itself is small at normal load: a plain ETH transfer is 21,000 gas, so at a 2 gwei base fee and a 0.1 gwei tip it costs about 0.000044 ETH, around ten cents.

Selling ETH that sits on an exchange

If the ETH is on an exchange, selling it there for USDT is one trade and usually the cheapest option. Withdrawing ETH to the swap makes sense when you want USDT on a network the exchange does not support, or when you want to keep the exchange account empty. In that case withdraw with the Ethereum (ERC20) network option and account for the exchange's withdrawal fee, which is subtracted from the amount you type. Some exchanges also offer withdrawals on Arbitrum or Base, which are cheaper but land on a different network than this deposit expects.

Numbers for common amounts

The column on the right subtracts the 1% service fee and the 1.3 USDT payout fee. Market moves between quote and confirmation shift these numbers slightly; the live quote is what counts.
