What to know about Kusama
Kusama is Polkadot's canary network: the same technology, released earlier and with faster governance, so new features land there first. It has its own coin, KSM, and its own address prefix. Like Polkadot, Kusama moved everyday balances to its Asset Hub, which is the network the provider uses for KSM. A Kusama address is the same key as your Polkadot address written in a different SS58 format; it starts with a capital letter instead of 1. Kusama also has an existential deposit: an account that falls below it is removed and the remainder is lost. Staking periods on Kusama are shorter than on Polkadot, but staked KSM still cannot be swapped until it is unbonded.
