How to Swap AVAX to USDT: C-Chain vs X-Chain Explained

Swap Avalanche AVAX to USDT: send from the C-Chain (0x address), not the X- or P-Chain, minimum 0.7 AVAX, 30 blocks to confirm, and how to move AVAX between chains.

Comparison of Avalanche chains: C-Chain with 0x addresses can send to the deposit; X-Chain and P-Chain addresses must move AVAX to the C-Chain first.
AVAX for the swap must come from the C-Chain, the one with 0x addresses. Open the full-size diagram

To swap AVAX to USDT, send AVAX from the Avalanche C-Chain โ€” the chain with 0x addresses that MetaMask and Core show by default โ€” to the deposit on the AVAX to USDT page. The minimum is about 0.7 AVAX (roughly $7 with AVAX near $9.70), the provider waits for 30 C-Chain blocks, and the USDT arrives on the network you pick. The one Avalanche-specific trap is that AVAX lives on three chains with different addresses.

Three chains, one coin

Avalanche's primary network consists of the X-Chain (for transfers, addresses like X-avax1โ€ฆ), the P-Chain (for staking and validators, P-avax1โ€ฆ) and the C-Chain (the EVM chain, 0xโ€ฆ). The same AVAX moves between them through cross-chain export and import transactions inside the Core wallet. Exchanges mostly use the C-Chain today, and so does this swap pair.

If you staked AVAX, your coins are on the P-Chain and locked for the staking period you chose, between two weeks and a year. They return to the P-Chain when the period ends, and you then move them to the C-Chain before sending.

Moving AVAX to the C-Chain in Core

  1. Open the Core wallet (extension or web) and look at the balance breakdown by chain.
  2. Use the cross-chain transfer feature to send AVAX from X-Chain or P-Chain to C-Chain. It is two transactions โ€” export and import โ€” and Core signs both.
  3. Wait until the C-Chain balance shows the coins. This normally takes seconds.
  4. Now send from the C-Chain address (0xโ€ฆ) to the deposit.

MetaMask only sees the C-Chain, so if MetaMask shows zero AVAX but Core shows a balance, the coins are on X or P.

The swap

  1. Enter the AVAX amount in the widget and choose the USDT network for the payout: TRC20, BEP20, ERC20, Avalanche C-Chain itself and others.
  2. Paste the receive address for that network.
  3. Pick a floating rate (1% service fee) or fixed (1.5%).
  4. Create the order and send AVAX on the C-Chain to the 0x deposit address. Keep about 0.01 AVAX for gas if tokens remain in the wallet.
  5. 30 C-Chain blocks pass in about a minute. The provider's processing estimate is 2โ€“4 minutes, then the USDT payout is sent.

Why 30 blocks when Avalanche is final in a second

Avalanche's Snowman consensus finalises a C-Chain block within about a second of it being proposed; there is no probabilistic finality like on Bitcoin, where each extra block adds safety. The provider still waits for 30 blocks. The margin covers node lag, RPC providers that report blocks slightly late and the occasional rejected block, and it costs you well under a minute. If you are comparing services, a deposit that is credited after 1 block and one credited after 30 blocks on the C-Chain differ by seconds, not by safety in any practical sense.

C-Chain vs X-Chain for deposits

The table below is why the deposit must come from the C-Chain: a transfer on another chain uses a different address format and a different ledger, and the deposit address simply does not exist there.

Mistakes seen with AVAX deposits

  • Withdrawing AVAX from an exchange on the X-Chain. A few exchanges still offer an 'AVAX (X-Chain)' withdrawal option. Pick 'AVAX C-Chain' or 'AVAXC'.
  • Sending WAVAX. Wrapped AVAX is an ERC-20-style token on the C-Chain. The deposit expects the native coin; unwrap first.
  • Sending AVAX from BNB Smart Chain or Ethereum. Bridged AVAX tokens on other chains are not native AVAX and do not reach the order.
  • Leaving zero gas. If you swap all your AVAX, tokens left on the C-Chain cannot be moved until you top up.

The C-Chain explorer (Snowtrace or the Avalanche Explorer) shows your transaction by hash. Status Success with the deposit address in the To field means the coins arrived; the order page then counts 30 blocks. Because C-Chain blocks come every one to two seconds, a deposit that shows no progress after five minutes almost always failed or was sent on another chain โ€” look it up before sending again.

USDT on Avalanche as the payout

If you want to stay on Avalanche, choose USDT on the Avalanche C-Chain as the payout. It is a native Tether issue on the C-Chain (contract 0x9702230A8Ea53601f5cD2dc00fDBc13d4dF4A8c7), not the old bridged USDT.e. It arrives at the same 0x address you already use for AVAX. Remember that sending it later costs AVAX for gas โ€” do not swap your last AVAX if you plan to move the USDT.

FAQ

Which AVAX can I send to the swap?

AVAX on the Avalanche C-Chain, from a 0x address. X-Chain and P-Chain AVAX must be moved to the C-Chain first.

What is the minimum AVAX?

About 0.7 AVAX at the time of writing; the widget shows the current minimum.

How long does AVAX to USDT take?

About a minute for 30 C-Chain blocks, a few minutes of processing, then the USDT payout โ€” usually under 10 minutes.

Can I receive USDT on Avalanche?

Yes, USDT on the Avalanche C-Chain is one of the payout networks. It arrives at your 0x address.

My MetaMask shows 0 AVAX but Core shows a balance. Why?

MetaMask only shows the C-Chain. Your AVAX is on the X- or P-Chain; move it to the C-Chain in Core.
