Avalanche's Primary Network consists of three chains that all use AVAX but have different jobs and different address formats. The C-Chain is the EVM chain with 0x addresses where almost all wallets, exchanges, tokens and DeFi live. The X-Chain is a UTXO chain for simple transfers of AVAX, with addresses starting with X-avax1. The P-Chain coordinates validators and staking, with P-avax1 addresses. If you are sending AVAX to a wallet, an exchange or a swap and nobody told you otherwise, the C-Chain is the network to use.
The three chains side by side
| Chain | Address | Used for | Fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| C-Chain (Contract) | 0x… (same as Ethereum) | Wallets, tokens such as USDT and USDC, DeFi, exchanges | EIP-1559-style base fee in nAVAX (gwei), burned |
| X-Chain (Exchange) | X-avax1… | Plain AVAX transfers, cross-chain moves | Dynamic fee in AVAX, burned |
| P-Chain (Platform) | P-avax1… | Staking, delegation, validators, Avalanche L1s | Dynamic fee in AVAX, burned |
All three share the same AVAX supply. Moving AVAX between them is an export from one chain and an import on the other; wallets such as Core and the Avalanche web wallet do it as one “cross-chain transfer”. The same seed phrase controls all three addresses.
C-Chain fees
The C-Chain uses a dynamic base fee like Ethereum, quoted in nAVAX (1 nAVAX = 10^-9 AVAX, equal to a gwei). A plain AVAX transfer uses 21,000 gas and a token transfer about 50,000–65,000. The Etna upgrade in December 2024 lowered the minimum base fee on the C-Chain substantially, so in quiet periods fees are a small fraction of a cent. Like on any EVM chain, a wallet holding USDT or USDC on Avalanche needs some AVAX on the C-Chain to send them. The gas fee calculator works for the C-Chain with an AVAX price you type.
Common mix-ups
- Withdrawing from an exchange to an X-Chain address when the wallet only shows C-Chain. The AVAX is there, under the X-avax1 address; switch the wallet view or do a cross-chain transfer to C.
- Staking rewards appearing on the P-Chain. Delegation rewards are paid on the P-Chain. To swap them you have to move AVAX from P to C first.
- Assuming an 0x address works on X or P. It does not; those chains use bech32 addresses with an X- or P- prefix.
- Sending USDT “on Avalanche” — USDT and USDC on Avalanche live on the C-Chain only. There is no USDT on X or P.
- Confusing the C-Chain with other EVM chains. The 0x address is identical on Ethereum, BSC and Avalanche C-Chain; the network label decides where funds go. C-Chain is chain ID 43114.
Avalanche L1s (formerly subnets)
Projects can launch their own chains — now called Avalanche L1s — with their own validators, tokens and rules. Their validators are registered via the P-Chain. These are separate networks: a token on an Avalanche L1 is not on the C-Chain, and exchanges list such networks separately if at all. When a guide talks about “Avalanche” for payments or swaps, it means the C-Chain.
Which network to pick on KOT.CASH
The liquidity provider lists AVAX on two networks: AVAXC, the C-Chain, and a second network labelled AVAX. For deposits from almost any wallet or exchange, choose AVAXC and send from a 0x address on the C-Chain; the provider credits it after 30 confirmations, well under a minute with Avalanche's fast blocks and finality. The order page repeats the network next to the deposit address — if it says AVAXC, the deposit address is a 0x address. The minimum for AVAX to USDT is about 0.7 AVAX at the moment, and USDT can be paid out on the C-Chain too. Routes: AVAX to USDT and USDT to AVAX.
If your AVAX is on the X- or P-Chain, move it to the C-Chain in your wallet first. The cross-chain transfer costs a small AVAX fee and takes a few seconds.
FAQ
Which Avalanche chain should I use?
The C-Chain for almost everything: wallets, tokens, exchanges and swaps. X and P are for simple transfers and staking.
Why does my wallet show 0 AVAX after an exchange withdrawal?
The exchange may have sent to the X-Chain. Check the X-avax1 address or do a cross-chain transfer to the C-Chain.
Is my Avalanche C-Chain address the same as my Ethereum address?
Yes, if it comes from the same key. The network you choose decides where the funds go.
Where are my staking rewards?
On the P-Chain. Move them to the C-Chain before swapping or sending to an exchange.
How many confirmations does an AVAX deposit need on KOT.CASH?
30 on the C-Chain (AVAXC), less than a minute.
