How to Buy XRP with USDT: Reserve, Tag and Address Checks

To buy XRP with USDT, create a USDT → XRP order in the swap widget, paste an XRP Ledger address that starts with r, and send USDT on TRON or BNB Chain. On 21 October 2026 the minimum was 30.04 USDT on both networks and the XRP payout fee was 0.2 XRP (about $0.26). With XRP near $1.32, 100 USDT buys about 74.7 XRP after the 1% float fee and the payout fee. Two XRP Ledger rules decide whether the payout goes smoothly: the account reserve and the destination tag.

The account reserve: why a new wallet shows 1 XRP you cannot spend

Every account on the XRP Ledger must hold a minimum balance called the reserve. Since a validator vote in December 2024, the base reserve is 1 XRP, plus an owner reserve of 0.2 XRP for every object the account owns: a trust line for a token, an open offer, an escrow, a ticket, a page of NFTs. Before that vote the base reserve was 10 XRP, which is why older guides mention 10 or 20.

Two practical consequences. First, an address that has never held XRP does not exist on the ledger until a payment of at least the base reserve activates it. A swap payout of 20+ XRP does that automatically. Second, once activated, the reserve stays locked: a wallet showing 74.7 XRP lets you send about 73.7, minus a tiny transaction fee. Wallets such as Xaman display the spendable part separately.

Your own wallet or an exchange: the destination tag

Exchanges usually give all customers the same XRP address and identify deposits by a numeric destination tag. Your own wallet's address is unique to you and needs no tag. The standard swap form has no payout tag field, so:

• To your own wallet (Xaman, Ledger, Trezor, Bitget Wallet, others with XRP support): paste the r-address, no tag needed.
• To an exchange: either receive to your own wallet and forward the XRP with the exchange's tag, or use Multi-Hop or Split Swap — their forms include a memo/tag field for the payout.
• XRP sent to an exchange without its tag reaches the exchange's address but is not credited to your account until support identifies it. Expect a ticket and a wait.

Recognising a valid XRP address

Classic XRP Ledger addresses start with r and are 25–35 characters of base58 (no 0, O, I or l). Some services also show an X-address, starting with X, that encodes the address and the tag together. If a service gives you an X-address, ask for the classic r-address and tag instead, or receive to your own wallet first. Never paste the deposit address of a different coin; validation rejects it, but a quick look at the first character saves the round trip.

Amounts and costs

The 'spendable' column assumes a fresh wallet with no trust lines. Each token you later add a trust line for (for example RLUSD) locks another 0.2 XRP.

Steps

1. In the widget choose USDT on TRC20 or BEP20 and XRP to receive. Enter the amount.
2. Paste your r-address. If you are tempted to paste an exchange address, re-read the tag section above.
3. Create the order and send USDT on the chosen network. The provider waits for 20 TRON confirmations (about a minute) or 60 on BNB Chain.
4. XRP is paid out; ledgers close every 3–5 seconds and a validated payment is final.
5. Check the payout hash on an XRP Ledger explorer if your wallet has not refreshed.

When the payout seems missing

Look up the payout transaction hash. A result code of tesSUCCESS means the XRP is at the address. If the destination was an exchange and you had no tag, contact the exchange with that hash. If the code is tecNO_DST_INSUF_XRP, the payment tried to create a new account with less than the reserve — this does not happen with normal swap amounts, but it does with tiny test sends from other wallets.

Keep the order link until the XRP shows up in your wallet; support will ask for it together with the payout hash.
