What to know about Ethereum Classic
Ethereum Classic is the chain that kept the original Ethereum history when the main network forked in 2016 to reverse the DAO hack. It stayed on proof-of-work after Ethereum moved to staking, now mines with the ETChash algorithm and has a capped supply schedule that reduces block rewards every five million blocks. In 2020 ETC suffered several 51% attacks with deep chain reorganisations, and since then exchanges and swap providers ask for many more confirmations on ETC than on most coins; the table below shows the current requirement, which is why ETC deposits take longer than the 13-second block time suggests. ETC uses 0x addresses, the same keys as Ethereum, but it is an entirely separate network.
