What to know about EigenLayer
EigenLayer lets Ethereum stakers 'restake' their ETH to secure other services, and EIGEN is the token used for a second kind of security that covers faults which cannot be proven on Ethereum alone. EIGEN became transferable in October 2024. Under the hood it is backed one-to-one by a token called bEIGEN, which users do not normally hold; sending bEIGEN by mistake is one of the less obvious errors. EIGEN can itself be restaked in EigenLayer, and withdrawals from restaking go through an escrow delay before the tokens are back in the wallet. The provider handles EIGEN as an ERC20 on Ethereum.
