USDC on Base is Circle's native USD Coin on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network incubated by Coinbase. The official contract is 0x833589fCD6eDb6E08f4c7C32D4f71b54bdA02913, gas is paid in ETH on Base, and the token can be moved to and from Coinbase almost for free. Base also has an older bridged token, USDbC, which is not the same thing. Because Base has no Tether USDT, people holding USDC on Base often want to swap it into USDT on TRON, Ethereum or another chain โ which takes one order.
Native USDC versus USDbC
When Base launched in 2023, USDC arrived first through the Base bridge as โUSD Base Coinโ (USDbC, contract 0xd9aAEc86B65D86f6A7B5B1b0c42FFA531710b6CA). In September 2023 Circle issued USDC natively on Base. Native USDC is redeemable with Circle and moves cross-chain through Circle's CCTP; USDbC is a bridge receipt for USDC locked on Ethereum. Exchanges and the liquidity provider accept the native contract. If a wallet shows two USDC balances on Base, the one called USDbC needs to be swapped to native USDC before depositing anywhere.
What a transfer on Base costs
Base is an OP Stack rollup. A transaction pays an L2 execution fee plus an L1 data fee for publishing to Ethereum, both in ETH on Base. Since Ethereum's blob upgrade in March 2024 the data part dropped sharply, and a USDC transfer on Base usually costs well under a cent to a few cents. Without ETH on Base nothing moves: if you received USDC from Coinbase, also withdraw a little ETH on Base, or use a wallet that sponsors gas for USDC transfers.

Swapping USDC on Base to USDT
- Open the USDC to USDT swap and set the sending network to Base and the receiving network to the USDT network you need (TRC20, ERC20, BEP20, Solana, TON and others).
- Check the quote: the widget shows the USDT you receive after the service fee and the payout network fee.
- Paste your USDT address for the chosen network. For TRC20 that is a Tโฆ address, for BEP20 or ERC20 a 0x address.
- Send native USDC on Base to the deposit address. The provider credits after 30 Base confirmations, which is about a minute at two-second blocks.
- The payout hash appears on the order page; check it in the explorer of the receiving network.
Swapping a stablecoin to a stablecoin at a 1% service fee is not free; for large amounts compare with Coinbase's own conversion or a DEX on Base. The swap fee calculator puts the routes side by side, and the USDC to USDT guide covers peg differences between the two tokens.
Receiving USDC on Base from an exchange
Coinbase sends USDC on Base to Base addresses without a network fee for many users, which is why Base became a common on-ramp. Other exchanges list the network as โBaseโ or โBASEโ. The address is your regular 0x address: MetaMask, Rabby, Coinbase Wallet and hardware wallets all use the same address on Base as on Ethereum. Choosing Ethereum (ERC20) by mistake costs a much higher withdrawal fee but the coins still arrive at the same address, on mainnet.
USDC on Base and Circle's CCTP
Because USDC on Base is native, it can move to Ethereum, Arbitrum, Solana and other supported chains through Circle's Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol: the token is burned on Base and the same amount is minted on the destination. Many wallets and bridges use CCTP under the hood, so a โbridgeโ of native USDC does not leave you with a wrapped token. That is different from bridging USDbC or most other tokens, where you receive an IOU on the other side. If your goal is USDT rather than USDC on another chain, a swap does both steps at once; if you want USDC on another chain, CCTP-based routes are usually the cheapest.
Pitfalls specific to Base
- USDbC sent to a native USDC deposit. Not credited automatically; swap USDbC to USDC on Base first.
- Looking for USDT on Base. The provider lists no Tether USDT on Base; USDT-named tokens on Base are bridged or unofficial. Swap USDC instead of buying a token called USDT there.
- Smart wallet addresses. Coinbase Smart Wallet is a contract account; make sure the address you share is the one deployed on Base.
- Withdrawals to Ethereum via the official bridge take about seven days because of the optimistic challenge period. A swap or a CCTP transfer avoids that wait.
