How to Swap XLM to USDT: The Memo, Reserve and Timing

To swap XLM to USDT, create an XLM → USDT order in the swap widget, paste the USDT address you want to be paid to, and send Stellar lumens to the deposit address with the memo shown on the order page. On 21 October 2026 the minimum was about 168 XLM (roughly $30 at $0.179), the provider credited Stellar deposits after one confirmation, and the payout fee was 1.3 USDT on TRON or 0.15 USDT on BNB Chain. Processing was quoted at 2–4 minutes.

The memo is the part you must not skip

Stellar deposit addresses of exchanges and swap services are shared: one G… address receives payments for many customers or orders. The memo is what links your payment to your order. Without it the XLM lands on the right address and nobody can tell it was yours. The order page shows the memo next to the deposit address — copy both. Stellar memos come in several types (text, ID, hash); the order tells you which value to enter, and most wallets accept it in a single field called Memo.

• In Lobstr, Freighter, Solar or xBull the memo field is on the Send screen, usually below the amount.
• When withdrawing from an exchange, the withdrawal form has a memo or tag field for Stellar; fill it with the order's memo, not with your exchange account's own deposit memo.
• If you forgot it, do not send again. Write to support with the order link and the transaction hash; the payment can be matched manually.

Why your wallet will not let you send everything

Stellar accounts must keep a minimum balance. It is calculated as (2 + number of subentries) × 0.5 XLM, where subentries are trustlines, offers, extra signers and data entries. A plain account with no trustlines must keep 1 XLM; one with a USDC trustline 1.5 XLM; one with three trustlines 2.5 XLM. Wallets show this as 'reserved' or 'locked'. The transaction fee itself is tiny: the base fee is 100 stroops, 0.00001 XLM.

So the amount you can swap is your balance minus that minimum minus a fee. If you want to close the account entirely and recover the reserve, Stellar has an account merge operation that sends everything to another account — but a merge into a shared swap deposit address cannot carry a memo in the same way in every wallet, so for a swap use a normal payment and leave the reserve.

G-addresses, M-addresses and federation names

A Stellar address (public key) starts with G and has 56 characters. Some services use muxed addresses that start with M and embed an ID inside the address, replacing the memo. If an exchange gives you an M-address for your own deposits, that is fine for receiving XLM there — but for this swap you send to the order's G-address with the memo. Federation names such as name*domain.com are a lookup convenience; paste the resolved G-address, not the name.

Step by step

1. Choose XLM to send and USDT on TRON or BNB Chain to receive, enter the amount and check the quote.
2. Paste your USDT address and create the order.
3. Copy the deposit G-address and the memo from the order page.
4. Send XLM from your wallet or exchange, filling in the memo exactly. Keep at least the minimum balance in your wallet.
5. Stellar closes a ledger about every 5 seconds; the deposit is credited after one confirmation.
6. USDT is paid out within a few minutes; the order page shows the hash.

Payout network

With BNB Chain at 0.15 USDT and TRON at 1.3 USDT, the difference on a $30 swap is almost 4 percentage points; on $500 it is 0.2. If you hold USDC on Stellar rather than XLM, note that it is a different asset — the order must be created for that token, not for XLM.

Swap or exchange?

An exchange route means depositing XLM (with the exchange's memo), selling for USDT and withdrawing, paying a trading fee and a USDT withdrawal fee.
