How to Swap ALGO to USDT: Minimum Balance and Instant Finality

To swap ALGO to USDT, send ALGO from your Algorand account to the deposit address of a swap order and receive USDT on TRC20, BEP20, ERC20 or another listed network. Algorand blocks are final as soon as they are produced, so the provider waits for a single block — about three seconds. The catch is the minimum: about 266 ALGO at the time of writing, which corresponds to roughly $30. Your Algorand account also keeps a minimum balance that cannot be sent.

Algorand's minimum balance

Every Algorand account must hold at least 0.1 ALGO to exist. Each asset the account has opted into (USDC, USDT or any other ASA) adds another 0.1 ALGO, and apps the account has opted into add more depending on their storage. A wallet with USDC and two other tokens opted in therefore keeps 0.4 ALGO locked. Pera Wallet, Defly and other wallets show the 'minimum balance' or 'available' figure; send at most the available amount minus the 0.001 ALGO transaction fee.

If you want to free the locked ALGO later, opt out of assets you no longer hold — the 0.1 ALGO for each comes back to your available balance.

The swap at a glance

Step by step

1. Check the available ALGO balance in your wallet.
2. In the widget, select ALGO to send and USDT on the network you want, and enter at least about 266 ALGO.
3. Paste the USDT receive address: T… for TRC20, 0x… for BEP20 or ERC20.
4. Choose floating or fixed and create the order.
5. Send ALGO to the deposit address. The provider does not need a note (Algorand's memo field) for this deposit — leave it empty unless the order page shows one.
6. One block and the deposit is final. The provider's processing estimate is 1–2 minutes, then USDT is sent.

Why Algorand needs only one confirmation

Algorand uses a Byzantine agreement protocol with committees selected by verifiable random functions. A block is agreed upon before it is added to the chain, so there are no forks and no need to wait for more blocks. That is why the provider credits ALGO after one block, while proof-of-work coins need several. Algorand's 2024 upgrade introduced dynamic round times, which brought the average block interval down to about 2.8 seconds.

USDT on Algorand?

Tether did issue USDT on Algorand as asset ID 312769, and Circle issues USDC there as asset ID 31566704. For most people swapping ALGO, receiving USDT on TRC20 or BEP20 is more useful, since exchanges and P2P desks accept those widely. Common mistakes

• Sending into the minimum balance. The transaction fails; reduce the amount.
• Rekeyed accounts. If your account was rekeyed to another key (a feature some wallets use for multisig or hardware setups), make sure you sign with the authorised key; otherwise the wallet cannot send at all.
• Sending wrapped ALGO from another chain. The deposit expects native ALGO on Algorand.
• Typing the address. Algorand addresses are 58 characters of uppercase letters and digits with a built-in checksum. Copy and paste; the address validator can check the USDT payout address format.
