A lower available balance can mean that part of your spot funds is reserved for open orders rather than missing. Compare the same asset in the same account, then reconcile each relevant order's unfilled amount and completed trades. Cancelling an order can release its unexecuted reserve, but it does not reverse trades already filled or remove unrelated withdrawal restrictions.
Check which balance the screen is measuring
Start with the asset's actual units. A portfolio total converted into dollars or bitcoin is not proof that you own that whole amount in the currency you want to send. Also check the account compartment: a summary across products can differ from one spot account's available funds. This article's arithmetic concerns a simple spot holding reserved for an order, not leveraged positions, collateral haircuts or lending products.
Binance's spot activity guide distinguishes total balance, available balance and funds in orders. Kraken's available-funds guide likewise discusses amounts tied up in open orders. These are product examples, not a universal formula for every page called Wallet or Balance. Read the field definition before comparing two numbers.
Reconcile one partial fill in units, without market forecasts
Consider a fictional spot account holding 100 units of token Q. You place an order to sell 60 units, leaving 40 available for other uses under this simplified model. Then 15 units execute and 45 remain in the open order. Your total Q holding becomes 85, but only 40 are available because the other 45 still back the unfilled instruction. Fees and other transactions are excluded from this exercise.
| Stage | Total Q held | Q reserved for this order | Q available | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Before the order | 100 | 0 | 100 | No reserve in this exercise |
| Order for 60 Q accepted | 100 | 60 | 40 | The unfilled instruction reserves 60 |
| 15 Q sold, 45 Q still open | 85 | 45 | 40 | Completed sales reduce holdings; the rest remains reserved |
| Remaining order cancelled successfully | 85 | 0 | 85 | Only the unexecuted reserve returns to availability |
The last row is the crucial check: cancellation does not restore the starting 100 Q because 15 Q were already sold. The corresponding proceeds belong in the received asset's record, with actual fees considered. Do not look only for a reversal in token Q or describe the difference as a lost deposit. Review completed trades as well as the order status to understand how the holdings changed.
A buy order can reserve the currency being paid rather than the token being purchased. Identify the order direction before searching for the reservation. Two orders involving the same token name can affect different sides of a pair. This is an accounting distinction, not advice to place or cancel any particular trade. The fictional quantities demonstrate reconciliation without assuming a price or predicting execution.
Find every relevant order before changing anything
Inspect Open Orders and check pair filters. A view restricted to the current pair may hide orders using the same asset elsewhere. Binance's activity guide documents this type of filtering as well as separate order and trade history. If you see no row, first check the selected account and filter state; do not conclude immediately that the reserved amount is a platform error.
Record the order identifier, account, pair, direction, original amount, executed amount and remaining amount. Keep records from approximately the same point in time, since executions can occur while you are comparing screens. A trade-history entry establishes what executed; an open-order entry describes what can still execute. A screenshot from before a fill may not agree with a later balance because the underlying account genuinely changed.
- Select one asset and one spot account instead of comparing a converted portfolio total.
- Read the available and reserved fields, noting their definitions.
- Check open orders across relevant pairs, removing accidental display filters.
- Compare original, executed and remaining quantities for the relevant orders.
- If you choose to cancel, wait for the platform's resulting order state and recheck fills rather than relying on the button press.
- Reconcile the updated reserve and holdings, then investigate any remaining discrepancy through official support.
A cancel request is not the same evidence as a finished cancellation
Do not assume that clicking Cancel establishes the exact quantity released. An execution may occur before cancellation takes effect, or the request may fail. Reopen the order details and completed trades. If the final record shows a greater filled amount than your earlier screenshot, update the worksheet using that result. Do not repeatedly submit new sell or withdrawal instructions merely because you expected a different free balance.
Cancellation concerns the remaining instruction; it is not a blockchain refund transaction. An ordinary release of an internal reserve therefore need not produce an incoming network hash. Searching an explorer cannot explain every internal change in a centralized account. For an actual outgoing withdrawal, use its own record and, when available, its network identifier. Our withdrawal-pending guide covers that separate stage.
If availability is still low after orders are reconciled
Check whether the field concerns new trading orders or withdrawals. Kraken's withdrawal troubleshooting distinguishes open-order reservations from other withdrawal holds; some holds can coexist with trading availability. Do not treat every Withheld label as one cause or assume that cancelling an order removes a time-based security restriction. Use the current rules for that account and funding method.
Also distinguish coins in another account compartment, a pending withdrawal and products outside this simple spot example. If the records do not reconcile, give official support the asset, account, relevant order references, times and the unexplained difference. Exclude unrelated balances and wallet secrets. 'Total was 100, 15 executed, 45 still reserved, available is 40' is a more useful report than 'my coins vanished.'
Before a no-account swap, verify the amount you can actually send and the order's required asset and network. The native coin and token guide helps check the asset side of that preparation. A balance reserved in a different service's spot order cannot be counted as a completed deposit. Resolve the availability record before promising an outgoing amount that the sending account currently cannot use.
FAQ
Why can Binance available balance be zero while a total remains?
Open orders are one possible reservation, but account compartments and other restrictions can also matter. Compare the same asset and product, then inspect the relevant account and order records.
What does an open order mean for my available funds?
Its unexecuted instruction can reserve the funds needed to complete it. Partial fills change both holdings and the remaining reservation, so inspect trade history too.
Why are open orders not showing when funds appear reserved?
Check the account and pair filters before concluding that no order exists. Also confirm whether the balance field includes a different kind of hold.
