What Is USDT20? USDT Tickers on Swap Services Explained

USDT20 is a service label for Tether on Ethereum (ERC20), not a separate coin. Here is how USDT20, USDTRX and USDT BSC map to networks and addresses.

USDT20 is not a separate coin. It is a label some exchanges and swap services use for Tether's USDT on Ethereum, the ERC20 version. When a form says "ADA to USDT20" or "LTC to USDT20", it means you will receive ordinary USDT on Ethereum to an address that starts with 0x. The value is the same as any other USDT; what changes is the network, the address format and the fee you will pay to move the coins later.

The confusion comes from the fact that Tether issues USDT on many blockchains, and every service invents its own short codes to tell them apart. One platform writes USDT20, another USDTERC20, a third simply USDT with a network drop-down. Below is a practical map of the common labels and a short routine for checking which USDT you are really about to receive.

Where the USDT20 label comes from

Exchanges that list several versions of the same token need a separate ticker for each, because their internal ledgers treat them as different assets. The Bequant help centre, for example, describes USDT20 as USDT issued by Tether on the Ethereum network following the ERC20 standard, with addresses that start with 0x, and USDTRX as the TRON version with addresses that start with a capital T. The same page warns that the versions are not interoperable: a deposit must use the network the address belongs to.

Changelly also uses the USDT20 ticker for Tether on Ethereum. Search engines pick these codes up, which is why queries such as "dot to usdt20" or "shib to usdt20" exist at all. Tether itself does not use the word: on its supported protocols page the asset is simply USDโ‚ฎ on Ethereum, Tron, Solana, TON and other chains.

Common USDT labels and what they mean

USDTRX, USDTTRC20, USDT (TRC20)TRONT + 33 characters, 34 in totalTRX (energy and bandwidth)
USDTBSC, USDT (BEP20)BNB Smart Chain0x + 40 hex charactersBNB

Two rows in this table share the same address format: Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain both use 0x addresses, and the same wallet seed usually produces the same 0x address on both. That is convenient and dangerous at the same time. A wallet will accept either kind of USDT to that address, but the coins will only appear when you look at the right network.

Which USDT to pick when you swap ADA, LTC or DOT

Most of the USDT20 searches pair a volatile coin with Ethereum USDT: ADA to USDT20, LTC to USDT20, DOT to USDT20, SHIB to USDT20. Choosing ERC20 makes sense in a few situations and costs extra in others.

  • Pick ERC20 if the USDT is going to an Ethereum app, a hardware wallet account you already use on Ethereum, or an exchange that only credits ERC20 deposits.
  • Pick TRC20 if you mainly send USDT to other people or services that ask for a T-address; just remember that sending from TRON later requires TRX for energy.
  • Pick BEP20 or Solana if you want cheap follow-up transfers and the recipient supports those networks.
  • Do not pick ERC20 for a small amount you plan to move again soon: the gas for one more ERC20 transfer can be a noticeable share of a small balance.

If you are not sure what the recipient supports, ask them for the network name, not just "USDT". On KOT.CASH the network is shown next to the coin in the swap form, for example on the LTC to USDT or ADA to USDT pages, and the receive estimate already includes the payout network fee.

How to check what you are about to receive

  1. Read the network name next to USDT in the form, not only the ticker. USDT20 and ERC20 mean Ethereum.
  2. Open the receiving wallet and switch it to the same network. Copy the address from that screen.
  3. Compare the first characters with the table above: 0x for Ethereum or BSC, T for TRON.
  4. Paste the address into the address validator to catch typos and wrong formats.
  5. Before a large amount, send a small test or make sure the wallet already shows USDT on that network.
  6. After the payout, open the transaction in the explorer of that network and check the token contract.

What happens if you mix them up

The most common mistake is not losing funds but not seeing them. USDT sent on BNB Smart Chain to your 0x address is still yours if you control the key; the wallet simply has to show the BSC network. Adding the network in MetaMask or switching the network in Trust Wallet usually makes the balance appear.

Real trouble starts when the address belongs to a custodial account, such as an exchange deposit address that only listens to one network. Then recovery depends on that platform's support and is not guaranteed. A TRON address cannot receive ERC20 USDT at all, so a correctly working form will reject such a combination before you send.

Fees: why the label matters for your next transfer

The service fee of the swap does not depend much on which USDT you choose, but the payout network fee and, more importantly, your next transfer do. ERC20 transfers cost ETH gas that rises with network load. TRC20 transfers burn TRX unless the account has energy. BEP20 and Solana transfers are usually much cheaper. Compare typical costs with the stablecoin fee comparison before you decide.

If you already hold USDT on the wrong network for your purpose, you do not have to send it back and forth through an exchange account: a single simple swap from one USDT network to another works the same way as any other pair.

FAQ

Is USDT20 the same as USDT?

Yes in value: USDT20 is the label some services use for USDT on Ethereum (ERC20). It is the same Tether token, just on a specific network with 0x addresses.

Is USDT20 ERC20 or TRC20?

USDT20 means ERC20 on Ethereum. The TRON version is usually labelled USDTRX, USDTTRC20 or USDT (TRC20) and uses addresses starting with T.

Can I send USDT20 to a TRC20 address?

No. Ethereum and TRON are separate networks with different address formats, and a correct wallet or form will refuse the combination. To move value between them you need a swap or a bridge.

Why do some sites show USDT20 instead of USDT?

Platforms that list several USDT networks need a separate code for each in their internal ledger. USDT20 is one such code; it is not a ticker issued by Tether.
