Altvermögen and Neuvermögen
The cut-off is the purchase date. Coins bought up to and including 28 February 2021 are Altvermögen: under the old speculation-period rule they are tax-free when sold after one year, and by now every such coin has passed that year. Coins bought from 1 March 2021 are Neuvermögen and fall under the 27.5% special tax rate on realised gains.
Because both kinds can sit in the same wallet, you need to decide which is sold first. The Kryptowährungsverordnung (BGBl. II Nr. 455/2022) sets out how the holdings are separated; the calculator lets you choose "Altvermögen first" or "Neuvermögen first" so you can match the approach in your records or your provider's tax report.
Average cost and what counts as a sale
For Neuvermögen held in one wallet the regulation uses the moving average price (gleitender Durchschnittspreis): each purchase updates the average cost per coin, and a sale takes cost at the current average. Altvermögen is matched lot by lot in this calculator.
Swapping one cryptocurrency for another is not a taxable realisation in Austria; the acquisition cost carries over. Selling for euros, paying for goods or services, and exchanging into fiat are taxable. Losses on Neuvermögen can be offset against other capital income of the same year taxed at the special rate; they cannot be carried forward.
Neuvermögen gain = proceeds − quantity × moving average cost
tax = max(0, net Neuvermögen gain of the year) × 27.5%
Altvermögen = tax-free if sold more than one year after purchaseSources and simplifications

- Fees are added to cost and deducted from proceeds; check whether your case allows that.
- Offsetting with share or fund income, and the KESt withheld by Austrian providers, are not modelled.
- Staking and lending rewards, mining and airdrops follow separate rules and are not included.
