Exchange Bitcoin (BTC) to XRP

Before sending Bitcoin, establish the complete XRP receiving instruction. An address and a destination tag can serve different roles in getting the payout credited to the intended account.

Decide which XRP account you are funding

An XRP payout may go to an account you control directly or to a balance maintained by a receiving service. Those destinations can provide different instructions. Open the receive or deposit page for the intended account before entering the payout details. A familiar XRP address from an earlier transaction is not enough to identify which customer balance a service should credit.

XRP Ledger documentation explains that a destination tag can identify the beneficiary in a hosted service’s own records. The tag does not replace the ledger address. If the recipient supplies both, preserve them as a pair when reviewing the exchange. Do not reuse a tag from an unrelated receiving account or assume that all customers of the same service share the same instruction.

Match the receiving instruction to the fields you can enter

Recipient suppliesCheck before funding with BTCReason to pause
A classic address and a separate tagBoth values belong to the same current XRP deposit instructionThe payout form has no clear way to preserve the required tag
An X-addressThe receiving service’s instruction and the payout form support that representationYou would need to guess how to split or rewrite it
A classic address with no tag requirementThe recipient explicitly describes how this account receives XRPYou are considering inventing a tag to satisfy an unexplained field
Saved details from an older depositThe current receiving page still issues the same complete instructionThe address matches but the additional routing information differs
X-addresses can encode address and tag together. Their existence does not mean every exchange interface accepts that format.

Check routing before the Bitcoin payment leaves

  1. Read the destination as one instruction

Compare the XRP address and any supplied destination tag on the final exchange review. A saved contact can carry only part of the data you need. Do not conclude that the payout is correctly routed merely because the address field contains a valid-looking string.

  2. Keep Bitcoin funding details on the sending side

Pay using the Bitcoin deposit instruction for the exchange. The XRP payout address and tag are not Bitcoin funding details. If you switch between tabs to copy information, read the active asset before confirming the transfer so the two sides of the exchange remain distinguishable.

  3. Compare payout evidence with account credit

When an XRP payout record becomes available, compare its destination and tag, where present, with the receiving instruction. A payment visible on the ledger and a balance credited inside a hosted account are different observations. If they disagree, provide the payout reference to the receiving service and the exchange reference to exchange support.

Receiving XRP after a Bitcoin exchange

Does every XRP wallet require a destination tag?
The recipient’s instruction determines whether you need one for that destination. Tags can identify balances in hosted services, but that does not establish a universal requirement for every wallet. If a field is mandatory and your recipient provides no value, clarify the mismatch rather than inventing a number.
Can I take a tag from a previous XRP deposit?
Only rely on the current instruction for the intended receiving account. A tag that identified an older deposit or another customer balance is not evidence that a new payout will be credited correctly. Recheck both address and tag together before you submit the Bitcoin payment.
