A fictional balance display before and after reward withdrawal
| Teaching observation | ADA in ordinary outputs | ADA in the reward account | Combined teaching total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before the withdrawal | 100 | 4 | 104 |
| After withdrawal with an invented 0.2 ADA transaction cost | 103.8 | 0 | 103.8 |
The reward account and ordinary outputs use different accounting
Cardano documentation describes reward accounts as account-style balances rather than ordinary UTXO balances. The Cardano Foundation Rosetta reference also distinguishes reward balances from spendable outputs. A reward-account figure should therefore not be treated as an extra ordinary payment output just because the amount is denominated in ADA.
The example above assumes an interface that already includes rewards in a combined total. It is not a claim about every wallet’s default display. If your application shows rewards separately, establish how its total is calculated before applying that interpretation. A change between components can explain a display change without requiring a new reward distribution or an exchange transaction.
Use one consistent balance breakdown for the planned payment
- Label the components at one observation point
Record ordinary output balance, reward-account balance and the meaning of the displayed total. Avoid adding a reward number from one screen to a total from another time. A total that already includes that reward would count the same holding twice.
- Inspect how the wallet uses rewards in the actual transaction
A reward withdrawal has its own role in a Cardano transaction. Wallet workflows can differ, so do not assume this exchange requires two separate wallet operations or automatically withdraws rewards for you. Read the proposed transaction and ask the wallet provider about an unclear component.
- Review the actual ADA payment and BTC destination
Choose an amount the legitimate wallet can actually fund after its transaction requirements. Keep any reward withdrawal reference alongside the payment record when relevant. Obtain Bitcoin receiving details independently; a reward account is not the destination for the BTC output.
If the total looks unchanged, investigate the observation you made
- Check whether the total included the rewards already
- If it did, an unchanged total before fees can be consistent with moving the same ADA between accounting components. Do not diagnose missing rewards solely because the large headline number did not increase.
- Separate a transaction cost from an unexplained shortfall
- Compare the actual transaction’s cost and movements. The fictional fee above must not be used to explain a real wallet automatically. If the observed difference is not accounted for, keep the real transaction reference for the wallet provider.
- Trace an exchange only if a funding payment exists
- A withdrawal from a reward account alone is not proof that ADA paid the exchange. Identify the actual recipient and amount in the intended payment before asking about a BTC payout or creating another order.
Questions about ADA reward accounting
- Must a combined wallet total increase when I withdraw rewards?
- Not if that total already included them. Inspect the components and actual transaction cost before calling an unchanged total a missing credit.
- Is the example’s 0.2 ADA a quoted fee?
- No. It is an invented cost used only to make the arithmetic explicit. Use the actual wallet transaction estimate for a real payment.
- Does withdrawing rewards itself pay an exchange order?
- Do not assume so. Identify whether the actual transaction contains the intended payment to the issued recipient and trace that payment separately.
