Read the state behind an “unstaked” label
| Observed state | What it establishes | What remains to check |
|---|---|---|
| Unstake request recorded | The request exists | Whether its funds are finalizable |
| Request is finalizable | It is eligible for finalization | Whether finalization actually occurred |
| Finalization completed | The operation moved eligible funds to spendable balance | The current amount the wallet can send |
| Exchange payment sent | A separate outgoing payment exists | Its actual result and the ETH payout |
Waiting and finalizing answer different questions
The Octez staking reference describes finalize_unstake as the step that retrieves eligible unstaked funds into spendable balance. The Tezos user guide separately describes submitting the unstake request and finalizing it. A wallet’s summary word unstaked may therefore need context before you can use the amount in a payment calculation.
The user guide also describes automatic finalization by a service. That can mean you do not need to perform another action yourself, but it is not evidence that your particular request has already been finalized. Inspect the account state rather than assuming either that a manual step is always required or that automatic processing has already completed.
Account observations before opening the sending review
- Which balance category contains the funds?
- Use the wallet’s breakdown of spendable funds and pending unstake requests. If an application combines them in a portfolio total, do not copy that total into the exchange amount. Ask which entry actually changed after the request rather than treating a familiar headline value as available cash.
- Are you staking or only delegating?
- Tezos documentation distinguishes locked stake from delegation of liquid funds. Identify your actual arrangement before interpreting a restriction. A general statement that delegated tez can be spent does not establish that a separately staked amount is liquid, and a staking delay should not be applied to every delegated balance.
- Is the guidance from the current protocol?
- Older explanations can quote different cycle lengths or waiting estimates. This page does not convert a remembered cycle count into a promised funding date. Use the current account’s eligibility and completed result, especially when a purchase depends on funds being available soon.
A fictional plan can double-count a finalized receipt
Suppose a wallet initially shows 3 spendable XTZ and a separate request for 20 XTZ. Later the headline balance rises to include funds after finalization. Adding the old request to that new balance would count the same funds twice. These invented quantities illustrate reconciliation, not a prediction of the exact net amount after real operations.
Review the current breakdown once, then use the outgoing payment screen for the actual amount and costs. An unstake operation reference cannot substitute for the later exchange deposit reference. Record those stages separately so that a question about delayed finalization is not mistaken for an ETH payout already owed after funding.
Move from a resolved balance to the independent exchange
- Reconcile the spendable amount
If the request or finalization remains unclear, resolve that Tezos-side state through the trusted wallet or account history. Do not send another transaction just to see whether a summary label changes. Only count funds actually usable in the intended sending account.
- Review the current exchange instruction
Once usable XTZ is established, check the current amount, recipient and ETH receiving details. A previous quote does not promise to remain valid while unstaking completes. Preserve the actual XTZ payment result for any later enquiry about processing or receipt.
Tezos unstaking and payment questions
- Does an unstake request immediately become spendable XTZ?
- No. Establish eligibility and completed finalization, then read the current spendable balance.
- Must I always finalize manually?
- Do not assume so. The current user guide describes automatic finalization; verify the actual account result.
- Are delegation and locked staking identical balance states?
- No. Tezos documentation distinguishes delegated liquid funds from locked stake.
- Can I use an unstake reference as the exchange payment reference?
- No. Keep the later instructed XTZ payment and its result separately.
