Three independent checks before the SOL purchase
| Check | Evidence to inspect | Mistaken shortcut |
|---|---|---|
| Role | The identity’s relationship to the NNS neuron | I can vote, so I can withdraw |
| State | The neuron’s current dissolve state | The controller logged in, so the stake is liquid |
| Account balance | The actual transferable ICP in the sending account | The neuron is visible, so its entire stake can pay |
| Exchange funding | The later instructed ICP payment | A neuron operation already paid the exchange |
A voting operator and a fund controller can see the same neuron
In a fictional team setup, a colleague has the hotkey used for routine governance and the owner keeps the controller separately. Both can discuss the same neuron, but their access does not have the same scope. Asking the colleague to exchange the displayed stake assumes authority that their voting role does not provide. Clarify responsibility without requesting anyone’s private credentials.
The official governance guide says hotkeys can vote and perform certain governance actions but cannot disburse a neuron or change its dissolve delay. This is different from a temporary exchange-interface problem. Switching destination coins, refreshing a quote or retrying a transfer does not turn limited neuron access into controller authority.
Hand the unresolved step to the right person
- Describe the permission or state question
Tell the authorized owner which neuron and operation you mean and which connected role you observed. Keep this enquiry separate from exchange support. The owner can review the governance action through the trusted interface without sending controller keys or seed material to another person.
- Reconcile the resulting ICP account
If the owner separately authorizes a valid disbursement, verify the resulting ledger receipt and the account that received it. Do not assume a request completed, or that any account displayed beside the neuron was selected. Use the actual post-operation balance for subsequent planning.
- Prepare the independent exchange payment
Review the current ICP funding instruction and the intended Solana receiving details once usable ICP is established. Save the real ICP payment reference. A successful governance action, a screenshot of voting access and an exchange funding transfer are three different records.
Neuron access and exchange questions
- Does a hotkey grant permission to disburse an NNS neuron?
- No. The governance reference separates limited hotkey permissions from the controller’s authority.
- Does a controller login prove the neuron is already dissolved?
- No. Check the neuron’s actual state separately from the connected role.
- Can I enter the displayed neuron stake as my exchange payment amount?
- Only use ICP actually available for transfer in the sending ledger account. A stake display does not establish that balance.
- Does this NNS role table apply unchanged to SNS neurons?
- No. The official SNS reference describes a different permission model.
