A principal can be associated with more than one account
The ICRC-1 account model consists of an owner principal and an optional subaccount. If the subaccount is omitted, the standard uses the default value. An instruction referring to a particular non-default subaccount should therefore not be silently reduced to the principal alone just because a form accepts that shorter description.
The official ICP ledger interface also defines AccountIdentifier, a receiving-account representation distinct from the principal text. Its transfer interface and the ICRC account model describe the recipient in different forms. Obtain the format your receiving wallet or platform actually provides and clarify what the offered payout supports; do not perform an improvised manual conversion.
Keep identity, account and ledger references separate
| Identifier | Role to establish | Mistake to prevent |
|---|---|---|
| Principal | Identifies the account owner in the ICRC model | Assuming it always names the specific subaccount intended |
| Subaccount | Distinguishes an account under that owner | Dropping it because the input field looks unfamiliar |
| AccountIdentifier | A recipient representation in the ICP ledger interface | Treating a principal string as the same encoded value |
| Ledger canister reference | Identifies the ledger service for an asset | Using it as your personal receiving instruction |
Confirm which account the purchase should fund
- Open the ICP receive view for the intended account
- If the wallet has several accounts or project balances, choose the one meant for this purchase before copying anything. A general identity settings page can show a principal without showing the receiving format for that specific ledger account.
- Preserve the account details as one instruction
- Keep any required subaccount or ready-made receiving identifier with its context. If the exchange form cannot represent the supplied instruction, resolve that question before sending Bitcoin. Do not replace it with a ledger canister ID or remove a field simply to make validation succeed.
- Do not assume a default account is the intended project account
- Ask the receiving party which balance it expects to increase. A technically valid destination can still refer to a different account under the same owner. Clarifying the account before funding is more useful than trying to reconstruct the intended project balance after a payout.
A token balance check needs the right ledger and account
ICPโs ledger guide distinguishes asset ledgers and documents subaccounts and transaction history. When investigating receipt, inspect the intended asset and account rather than a general identity view or another tokenโs ledger. A zero in an unrelated balance panel cannot establish that the ICP payout is absent.
Keep the exchange reference, the Bitcoin input transaction and the actual ICP payout reference separate. If a receiving record is unclear, provide the original receiving instruction and explain which account you checked. Do not expose recovery material or sign an unexplained transfer to prove ownership. A support investigation should compare the intended recipient with the actual payout record, not turn a copied principal into a guessed alternative address.
Questions about the ICP receiving account
- Can I drop the supplied subaccount and use only the principal?
- Do not silently change an instruction for a particular account. The ICRC model uses a default when subaccount is omitted, which may not be the intended recipient account.
- Is the ledger canister ID my ICP receiving address?
- It identifies the ledger service, not your personal account instruction. Use receiving details issued for the actual wallet account or hosted recipient.
- Do all payout forms accept every ICP account representation?
- Protocol interfaces do not establish what a particular form supports. Clarify the supplied receiving format before funding instead of converting identifiers by guesswork.
