Decide whether you are making a payment or retiring an account
Algorand payment transactions can include an optional CloseRemainderTo field. The official transaction reference describes it as a request to close the sender account and move its remaining funds after the fee and payment amount have been paid. That is an additional instruction, not merely another spelling of the receiver field.
For an ordinary ALGO to USDT exchange, start with the payment the order actually requires. Do not add an account-closing action just to make a wallet’s displayed balance reach zero. If account retirement is genuinely your separate intention, review its requirements with the wallet first and confirm how the intended receiving service handles that kind of transfer. This page does not assume that a close-out will be credited as an ordinary exchange payment.
Read the payment amount and remaining-funds instruction separately
| Detail under review | Meaning to establish | Reason to pause |
|---|---|---|
| Receiver and ordinary payment amount | The destination and value of the intended payment | They do not match the issued exchange instruction |
| CloseRemainderTo / close-account option | A separate instruction concerning the rest of the sending account | You intended only to exchange a selected amount |
| Minimum-balance message | The account’s current funding requirements | You are guessing that account closure is the only solution |
| USDT receiving network | The destination network for the separate payout | It has been inferred from the ALGO input network |
When a wallet offers more than one way to empty a balance
- Keep the intended payment explicit
- Write down the ALGO amount you mean to exchange. Review the wallet’s final operation summary rather than assuming every “all” or “close” label has the same behavior. Ask the wallet provider to explain an unfamiliar account-state change before signing.
- Do not treat an account requirement as an exchange fee
- Algorand accounts have a minimum balance that depends on their asset and application use. A remainder left by the wallet can relate to that account state. It is not automatically an extra amount charged by the exchange, nor does it justify changing the payment instruction blindly.
- Preserve the receiving instruction for the output
- Choose the USDT network supported by your recipient and keep its deposit details with the order. Closing or retaining an Algorand account does not select a USDT receiving network or create a deposit account on another platform.
If a payment was already sent, describe the actual operation
Save its transaction reference and report whether it contained an ordinary payment only or also a close-out. Keep the requested amount separate from any remainder movement when explaining the record. Do not infer that every value visible in the transaction was the exchange’s expected funding amount.
If the credited amount is unclear, ask for the existing transfer to be checked before sending another payment. An account-close flag changes the question that needs investigation; it does not prove that an exchange lost a transfer or that repeating it will resolve the discrepancy.
ALGO payment review questions
- Must I close an Algorand account to exchange part of its ALGO?
- An ordinary payment and an account close-out are different intentions. Do not add a closing instruction merely to pay a selected exchange amount.
- Is CloseRemainderTo another name for the payment receiver?
- No. The reference describes an additional account-closing instruction that moves remaining funds after the ordinary amount and fee.
- Does a wallet remainder mean the exchange took an extra fee?
- Not by itself. Review the account’s minimum-balance requirements and the actual payment record before attributing a remainder to an exchange charge.
