How to Exchange XRP to USDT — Destination Tags Explained

Swap XRP to USDT safely: destination tags, the XRP Ledger reserve, USDT networks, timing, fees and what to do if you forgot the tag. No sign-up needed.

XRP is fast and cheap to move: the XRP Ledger closes a new ledger every few seconds and a typical transaction burns a fraction of a cent. Swapping XRP to USDT is therefore quick — as long as you understand the one XRP-specific detail that causes most lost deposits: the destination tag. This guide explains tags, the account reserve, how to choose the USDT network and how to swap step by step. The live rate is on the XRP to USDT page.

The XRP Ledger in brief

  • Addresses start with r and are 25–35 characters long.
  • Ledgers close every 3–5 seconds. Once a ledger with your transaction is validated, the transaction is final — there are no probabilistic confirmations as in Bitcoin.
  • Fees are burned. The base fee is 10 drops (0.00001 XRP), rising slightly under load.
  • Accounts have a reserve. An address must hold a minimum balance to exist. The base reserve was lowered to 1 XRP in December 2024; each object the account owns (trust lines, offers) adds an owner reserve, currently 0.2 XRP. This XRP cannot be sent away while the account exists.
  • The reserve is why your wallet may not let you send your entire balance: at least 1 XRP stays behind.

Destination tags: the part that matters

Exchanges and swap services often receive XRP for many customers at a single shared address. The destination tag — a number attached to the transaction — tells the service which customer or order the XRP belongs to. Think of the address as a building and the tag as the apartment number.

  • If the deposit instructions show a tag, you must include it.
  • If you send without the tag, the XRP arrives at the service’s address but cannot be matched automatically. Recovery requires a support request with the transaction hash, and it can take days — or fail.
  • Your own self-custody wallet address does not need a tag when you receive. A tag is only required by the receiving service when it uses shared addresses.
  • Some wallets call the field “memo” or “tag”; on the XRP Ledger it is the destination tag.

    Choosing the USDT network

You will receive USDT on another chain. Choose the one your next destination supports:

    USDT networkAddressWhen it fits
TRON (TRC-20)T…P2P, exchanges, payments in emerging markets
BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20)0x…Binance ecosystem and DeFi
    Ethereum (ERC-20)0x…DeFi, institutional platforms
    SolanaBase58Solana apps, fast payments

Check that the 0x address is on the right chain — BEP-20 and ERC-20 addresses look identical. Our network fee comparison puts typical transfer costs side by side.

There is also a dollar stablecoin native to the XRP Ledger (Ripple’s RLUSD, launched in December 2024) and various issued tokens. Those are different assets from USDT; if your destination needs USDT, swap to USDT.

Step by step: XRP to USDT

  • Open the XRP → USDT page and pick the USDT network.
  • Enter the XRP amount; remember that 1 XRP of your balance is reserved.
  • Paste your USDT address and verify it.
  • Add an XRP refund address (and tag, if the refund goes to an exchange).
  • Create the order. Copy the deposit address and the destination tag if one is shown.
  • Send the XRP with the tag. Double-check the tag field before confirming.
  • The deposit validates within seconds; USDT is then sent and the payout hash appears.
  • How long does it take?

The XRP side is the fastest part of almost any swap: a validated ledger in a few seconds. Most of the total time is the service’s processing and the USDT payout network. TRON, BNB Smart Chain and Solana payouts typically land within a minute; Ethereum within a few minutes. The confirmation time estimator shows typical values per network.

What if you forgot the destination tag?

  • Do not send again “to fix it” — that just creates a second untagged deposit.
  • Find the transaction hash in your wallet or exchange history.
  • Contact the receiving service with the hash, amount, time and your order ID. Explain that the tag was missing.
  • Be ready to prove ownership of the sending address, for example by signing a message or sending a tiny verification amount.
  • Prevention is far easier: always paste the tag from the instructions, and if your wallet supports address books, save the address together with its tag.

    Fees

  • XRP Ledger fee — a few drops, negligible.
  • Swap spread and service fee — in the quote.
  • USDT payout network fee — in the quote; varies by network.
  • Because XRP is cheap to move, XRP → USDT is one of the more cost-efficient routes into stablecoins.

    Taking profit in steps

XRP has seen sharp rallies. If you are converting to USDT to take profit, a ladder of sales at pre-set prices avoids an all-or-nothing decision. The take-profit ladder calculator shows proceeds, average exit price and when your original cost is recovered; each rung can be its own XRP → USDT swap.

    Taxes and records

Converting XRP to USDT is a taxable disposal in many jurisdictions. Record the date, amounts, local-currency value and both transaction hashes. If you bought XRP in parts, the tax lot calculator determines which lots you sold under FIFO, LIFO or HIFO.

Example: 3,000 XRP to USDT on TRON

You hold 3,000 XRP in a self-custody wallet and want stablecoins on TRON for a P2P sale.

  • Your spendable balance is 2,999 XRP because 1 XRP is the base reserve (more if your account has trust lines).
  • You create an XRP → USDT order for 2,990 XRP, leaving a little extra for future fees, and choose TRC-20.
  • The order page shows a deposit address and a destination tag. You paste both into the wallet and confirm.
  • The ledger validates the payment within seconds, the swap is processed, and USDT arrives at your T… address shortly after. The order page shows both hashes.
  • Total cost: a few drops of XRP, the swap spread and the TRON payout fee included in the quote.

Sending from an exchange instead of a wallet

If your XRP sits on an exchange, enter the deposit address and the destination tag in the exchange’s withdrawal form. Exchanges label the tag field differently (“Tag”, “Memo”, “Destination tag”) and some hide it behind an “advanced” toggle — look for it. Also note that exchanges charge their own withdrawal fee, usually larger than the network fee, and may process withdrawals with a delay. If the swap order’s rate window is short, withdraw to your own wallet first and swap from there.

    Security notes specific to XRP

  • Scam “airdrops” on the XRP Ledger often arrive as trust-line offers or tiny payments with a memo pointing to a website. Ignore them; never sign transactions on unknown sites.
  • Your XRP wallet secret (family seed starting with s, or a recovery phrase) is never needed for a swap. Anyone asking for it is attempting theft.
  • Some wallets let you require destination tags on your own account if you run a business that receives from many customers; personal wallets normally do not need this.
  • Checklist

  • Destination tag copied and pasted when required.
  • 1 XRP reserve accounted for.
  • USDT network matches the destination.
  • Address verified with the address validator if unsure.
  • Order ID and hashes saved.
  • XRP or USDT: what you give up by switching

Converting XRP to USDT swaps price exposure for stability. If XRP rises after the swap, you miss that move; if it falls, you are protected. Some holders keep a core XRP position for the long term and convert only the part they will need in the coming months. Others convert fully and buy back later in steps using the DCA calculator to plan the re-entry. There is no universally right answer — but deciding the split before you swap, rather than after a sharp move, usually leads to better decisions.

With the tag in place, XRP → USDT takes a few seconds on the XRP side and a few minutes overall — and the stablecoins land in a wallet you control.
