The 12-month test
To use the CGT discount you must have owned the asset for at least 12 months, not counting the day you acquired it or the day you disposed of it. In practice a coin bought on 10 January 2025 qualifies when sold on 11 January 2026 or later. The calculator checks this for every matched parcel and shows gains split into non-discount (held 12 months or less) and discount gains.
Which parcel you sold matters. The ATO accepts identifying specific parcels when your records show which units were disposed of; otherwise FIFO is the practical default. You can switch between FIFO, HIFO and LIFO to see the difference, but use the method your records support.
Losses first, discount second
Capital losses of the year, and net capital losses carried from earlier years, must be applied before the 50% discount. You may choose which gains they reduce, and the order that gives the lowest tax is non-discount gains first, then discount gains. Only after that is the remaining discount gain halved. Losses that are not used carry forward without time limit.
net capital gain = (non-discount gains โ losses) + 50% ร (discount gains โ remaining losses)
extra tax = tax(other income + net capital gain) โ tax(other income)Rates used
2025โ26 resident rates: 0% up to $18,200; 16% from $18,201 to $45,000; 30% to $135,000; 37% to $190,000; 45% above. From 1 July 2026 the 16% rate becomes 15% (2026โ27 option). The Medicare levy of 2% can be included; the low-income reduction and the Medicare levy surcharge are not modelled.

What is simplified
- One coin per calculation; each swap needs to be entered as a sell of the coin given up at its AUD market value.
- Personal-use asset exemption, trading as a business, non-resident rates and tax offsets are not included.
- Staking rewards and airdrops are ordinary income when received and are outside the calculation.
Frequently asked questions
+How long do I need to hold crypto for the 50% CGT discount?
At least 12 months, excluding the days of acquisition and disposal. The discount applies to individuals and trusts, not companies.
+Is swapping crypto for crypto a CGT event in Australia?
Yes. Disposing of one coin for another is a CGT event; the capital proceeds are the market value of the coin you receive.
+Are capital losses applied before or after the discount?
Before. Losses reduce capital gains first, and the 50% discount applies only to the discount gains that remain.
+Can crypto losses reduce my salary income?
No. Capital losses only offset capital gains; unused losses carry forward to future years.
